HELLYEAH’s "MAGICAL SUCCESS"
It is one of those responses usually expressed with enthusiasm and
often after a couple of cold ones. You’ve probably said it yourself or
certainly heard others say it. Think about it. If someone asks you if
you would like to go to Streeters’ Ground Zero Nightclub on February 9
to hear a kick-ass heavy metal band, what is your response going to
be? Yes? I don’t think so — how about HELLYEAH.

VALLEY SCENE MAGAZINE: December
Can I Get a HELLYEAH for Christmas?
By Chrystal Ann Heidemann
If
you are looking for something to get the metal fan on your list this holiday, I
can assure you that the new Mudvayne CD, By the People_For the People, and the
HellYeah DVD, Below the Belt, will be a huge hit. Yes, parents should be
advised of explicit lyrics, nudity, and vivid displays of alcohol abuse - but
it’s all in the name of rock.
By
the People_For the People is a "best of" album with a personal touch
- a conjoined effort between Mudvayne and the fans. The fans picked the songs,
and the band chose which versions were to be released from a vault of
recordings ranging from demos to live performances. Each track is introduced by
singer and lyricist, Chad Gray - giving a little bit of background behind the
song.
I
admit it. I never really gave Mudvayne a chance. I was out of my hardcore phase
and into college by the time they became popular. Since then, I often
categorize metal bands under my depressing, angry, ‘please-stop-screaming!’
catalogue. However, I am impressed with Mudvayne’s musicality. The song
structures are complex, but hold a line of continuity that keeps a listener
engaged. Sometimes metal bands go so far off the original concept, that a
listener can get lost in a sea of bass and battering kick drums.
By
the People_For the People showcases talent and versatility - a healthy variety
of groove and thrash metal combined with some modern hard rock. The CD even
features an impressive cover of The Police’s King of Pain. Gray’s voice is
incredible - unique, with a blend of recognizable qualities from other
well-known vocalists (some who have likely used him as an influence).
It’s
amazing how he manages to keep such a strong sound after watching him in action
on stage and off in HELLYEAH’s Below the Belt DVD. If you haven’t heard of
HELLYEAH yet - you should get on that.
HELLYEAH
is the metal super group made up of Gray, guitarist Greg Tribbett (also from
Mudvayne), Vinnie Paul, drummer of Pantera and Damageplan, bassist Bob Zilla
from DamagePlan, and guitarist Tom Maxwell from Nothingface.
In
Below the Belt, we are invited to watch the creation of new band - a group of
motivated, inspired, and experienced rockers, who are ready to take their
careers to the next level rather than sit back and fade away. For once, we see
a successful band in the fresh stages - free of "Behind the Music"
desperation. We see a band of musicians that have been through the hardest of
times- rock stars that still want to make music and party hard - but want to
live as well.
We
follow HELLYEAH into recording sessions at the late Dimebag Darell’s home
studio, where they buckle down with the tapes rolling and beer flowing to write
their self-titled debut albuman album that triggers a raunchy release party
which sets the tone for a wild worldwide tour. If you’ve ever wanted to live
the rock star life, this DVD will make you crave it even more - lots of drinks,
crazy crowds, backstage bashes, tour bus snatchings, and loud metal mania. It
shows the magic that can happen when egos are pushed aside and focus is put
purely on the music.
It’s
apparent that the guys of HELLYEAH respect their loyal fans’ opinions. With the
rise of social media, HELLYEAH saw an opportunity to closely interact with
their fans and partnered with 16 companies creating promotions such as
myYearbook’s opening band competition, DanceJam’s mosh pit dance contest, and
Meebo’s backstage chats. Currently, HELLYEAH is on their BALLS VOLUME AND
STRENGTH tour - the tour cities and name was chosen by the fans through a
polling community.
With
two top ten hits, "Alcohaulin’ Ass" and "You Wouldn’t Know"
and a song included on MADDEN NFL ‘08, it’s safe to say that HELLYEAH has only
just begun - and that the sound and scene that some of us have been missing is
back. In the case of both Mudvayne and HELLYEAH, I must say that I’m excited to
get my hands on some well-composed, masterfully-played music.

Metal maniacs Hellyeah
have set the second leg of their national headlining Balls, Volume,
Strength Tour with Machine Head, Nonpoint and Ankla supporting. After
wrapping the first leg of their successful tour Dec. 16 in Amarillo,
TX, the trek will re-launch Jan. 25 in Clifton Park, NY, with dates
running through March.
Hellyeah features Pantera
and Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul; singer Chad Gray and guitarist Greg
Tribbett (both from Mudvayne); with guitarist Tom Maxwell (from
Nothingface) and bassist Bob Zilla (from Damageplan). The explosive and
uncompromising band just released its third single “Thank You,” which
was the most added track on Active Rock Radio stations two weeks in a
row; the song is a shout-out to the band’s recently departed family
members: Paul’s brother Dimebag Darrell of Pantera, Maxwell’s mother
and Gray’s grandmother.
The band also recently released its “Below the Belt” DVD (Epic
Records), which offers fans an inside look at the band’s life on the
road with clips dating back to the day the band was formed. It also
features footage from multiple live performances and music videos, as
well as personal interviews with all the band members. Other highlights
include snippets of the band’s first recording sessions at Dimebag
Darrell’s legendary Chasin’ Jason studio in Dallas, TX, as well as
backstage footage from the band’s world tour. Hellyeah’s self-titled
debut CD entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at #9 earlier this
year with current sales over 250,000.
